Did you know that only 9% of all plastic is recycled? The rest of it usually just ends up in oceans. As recycling statistics estimate, there will be 12 billion metric tons of plastic in landfills by 2050. That’s 35,000 times heavier than the Empire State Building! National Geographic states that 8 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year. Plastic has become such a problem that we now need to rethink plastic chemistry, product design, recycling strategies, and consumer use. “Most climate scientists agree that immediate-term action is crucial to staving off the worst impacts of climate change,” the researchers stress. “This study finds that building reuse can avoid unnecessary carbon outlays and help communities achieve their near-term carbon reduction goals.”
Consumers Are Demanding Sustainability
An independent study commissioned by SmartestEnergy reveals that consumers are increasingly favouring brands with a commitment to environmental sustainability. The study reveals that 4 out of 5 people describe themselves as likely to choose a brand with a positive approach to environmental sustainability. This clearly demonstrates a development in consumer attitudes towards companies’ approach to the environment; 90% of people agree that it is vital that society becomes more energy-conscious. According to Recycling Lives 81% of consumers prefer to buy from sustainable sellers. This is only going to increase in 2021. Companies will benefit greatly from showing consumers that they are taking every step possible to be as environmentally friendly as they can be.
Going Green Can Save You Green
Going green means more than just recycling. There are other ways businesses can help lead the world to a path of sustainability; like lighting for example. Did you know that switching to LED lights can reduce your energy consumption anywhere from 50-90%? Over time this can save you thousands of dollars a year on your utility bills! LED lights also last 50 times longer than the typical incandescent light bulbs, saving you more money in the long run by not having to replace as often. Another huge act of sustainability is sign refurbishment. Refurbishing outdoor or indoor signs not only sends a great message about renewing what you already have but it’s also only ⅓ to ½ the cost of replacing your signs. Although people want sustainability, they also still want to shop/eat at places with the appearance of cleanliness. Refurbishing your old signs is a great way to please customers and keep money in the business.
Intention Is Everything
In conclusion, the most important thing to remember is that most people do not expect perfection immediately. The entire world is working everyday to try a little harder to be more environmentally conscious. As long as you and your business are putting in the effort and showing your consumers that you are trying, the people will value you for your efforts. We all have plenty of work to do to attain sustainability and it only takes a few simple choices to get the ball rolling. Let 2021 be a year of not only healing ourselves but also the world around us. Cheers to a new year and new choices!
